The Flight From Conversation - NYTimes.com

This is important news. Those of us in the Body of Christ and jump into the conversation with those we love and with the world around us and fill a huge void and make a world of difference. Maybe the best way to be a missionary is by having more real life conversations..... a rare commodity it seems....

OCHS JV LaCrosse Team Wins in Sudden Death Overtime Vs. Male Last Night

The OCHS JV team played their finest game of the year last night.  It was intense and the score was back and forth all evening in a light rain.  Our guys played with more fight and energy than they have all season and they simply believed that should win.  To a man our team played with heart and hustle and every man who stepped on the field contributed to the victory.

Right at the end of regulation play with the score, Male 9 / OHCS 8, Will Persky threw a side armed feed to Chad Szczublewski who fired on the cage in a seamless sidearm shot and tied the game.  Both those guys had their best games of the season in my opinion.  As did several others like Carson Axtell and Josh DiSantis. So we ended regulation tied and heading into a Sudden Death overtime where the first one to score wins.

After a quick briefing from the head coach, Marcus Lane, on what 'Sudden Death' means our team took the field.  As they were heading out I noticed that Trevor Horn, one of our Attack men, came over to Joshua Fuson and said something and then they hugged and I heard Joshua say as he took the field, 'I've got this.  I'll take care of it."  So, Trevor subbed himself out so that Joshua would be on the field in the Sudden Death situation.  Trevor knew something of Joshua's 'sniper' ability from lots of time in practice and games this season.  Still, it was the most unselfish, team-oriented move I've ever seen a player make.  In my opinion, the game hinged on Trevor's unselfishness in that moment.

We lost the face-off as Sudden Death play started.  Our defense held and we brought the ball into our offensive end of the field.  We fired two errant shots that didn't hit the mark but we maintained possession.  Then you could see it take shape.  Josh was playing at top crease when Chad had the ball up top center.  Chad moved to his left while Joshua arced into position and called for the ball and Chad delivered a spot-on pass that allowed Joshua to fire a high velocity zinger over his defender and past the goalie into the cage for the game winning shot!  It was a perfect feed and a perfect shot. They had practiced this many times in the freezing cold wind and on days that would fry your brain.  Practice pays off.

One lesson that David DiSantis, who coached the squad last evening, reminded the crew at the end was 'This is why we run extra sprints at the end of practice.'  True.  We must always prepare in advance so we'll be ready when our chance comes and especially if that chance comes in the form of a 'Sudden Death' situation.

One other lesson that isn't lost on me is that I've seen Joshua shoot that same shot dozens of times during the off season in our side yard playing wall ball -- preparing.  So, it wasn't his first time shooting that shot -- it was just the first time the fans got to see him shoot it! Joshua, your practice paid off. Private practice leads to public victories.

Last lesson, unselfishness and sacrifice for the good of the team wins games.  Way to go guys.

Obviously, I'm pumped and fired up and stoked and energized and everything a dad should be after his son has an experience like that.  But, it's not just for Joshua, I'm pumped for an entire team that showed what they are made of and what they can and will do in the future.  These guys are gonna be quite an exciting crew to watch!

To the team: I'm so proud of you and so glad that your hours of sweat and sacrifice paid off big last night!

Way to go Colonels!
