Tonite was AWESOME / Thunder Over Louisville 2008

11 year old boys are kinetic and goofy and wonderful! My son is no exception. It was wonderful to be at Thunder Over Louisville this evening with just him, me and our bikes. It was COLD and spat a little rain, but we dressed for the weather and the bikes allowed us to park over 2 miles from Thunder Ground Zero so we could make a fast get away after Thunder. The bikes also allowed us to check out a lot more of the total venue in downtown Louisville and we actually rode around much of 3rd, 4th and 5th streets and finally settled in for dinner at Jay Gumbos. He's is a big sea-food fan and has been wanting to eat crawdads for whie so tonite was his lucky night and he dove into a bowl of Crawfish Etoufee' and enjoyed it a lot. Later sharing a funnel cake and enjoying the last few acts of the Air Show and then being pounded by the report from the cannons on the Second Street Bridge and the fireworks sitting beside him on our bikes was a magic time for me. I know all to well as we prepare to send our oldest to college this fall that in just a few minutes we'll be preparing him to graduate from high school and Thunder won't be nearly as magical. But, tonight it was all I could hope for and more -- just my awesome 11 year old, me, a couple of bikes, a whole lot of others at the Water Front, Thunder and the Magic of Connecting with my son right where he is. Amazing nite to be sure.

Oh yeah, and he packed along some money he's earned from doing his chores and couldn't wait to buy a couple of 'shockers' --one is fake pack of gum with a 'piece of gum' sticking out of it so that when it's offered to someone and they 'pull' the gum they get the 'gee whiz' shocked out of em and the other is a 'shocking lasser'. Heaven for an 11 year old boy for sure! But, more revealing of the true heart of this amazing little boy is that on the way out he grabbed a street vendor passing by to buy his little brother a gift with his own money. This goofy, 'shocking' 11 year old has a heart of gold. I'm so glad God let him come to be my son.

I'm so grateful that God has let me be 'daddy' -- it's my favorite thing in this world!

Ride your bike to Thunder next year! It's a blast.

Jeff
