Amazing Icebergs!

BREATHTAKING!!

Amazing striped icebergs

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by
layers of snow that react to different conditions.

Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet
fills up with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can
freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a
green stripe.

Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up
when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

... Is this amazing??

Antarctica Frozen Wave Pixs - Nature is amazing!

The water froze the instant the wave broke through the

ice. That's what it is like in Antarctica where it is the

coldest weather in decades. Water freezes the instant

it comes in contact with the air. The temperature of the

water is already some degrees below freezing.

Just look at how the wave froze in mid-air!!!

Having the Internet means that we get to see something
that we never imagined! Pass it on for others to enjoy!

The post above came from an email forward I recieved from my dad. Wow, it is amazing. I couldnt' help but think of the journey that we're all on as Rising Leaders and how the conditions we experience throughout life shape us and stripe us beautifully. God doesn't waste anything in forging a leader.

Enjoy

Richard J Foster on Prayer

Check out this great prayer from Richard Foster in Prayer, Finding the Heart's True Home on page 15....

Dear Jesus,
how desperately I need to learn to pray. And yet when I am honest, I know that I often do not even want to pray.
I am distracted!
I am stubborn!
I am self-centered!

In your mercy, Jesus, bring my "want-er" more in line with my "need-er" so that I can come to want what I need.

In your name and for your sake, I pray. -- amen.

This is an exmple of 'simple prayer' and someone taught me this prayer a long time ago and it helped so much to just come to Jesus simply and admit that most of the time I simply don't want to pray and that I prefer to do life my way on my own terms as long as everything is going great. But, the moment the water gets rough I'm scrambling back up into the arms of God begging for safe passage... I bet you do the same thing!

See you later,

5 Great Books on Prayer

Prayer is the most natural thing in the world -- even for those who don't believe in God. Think of the words that leap from our heart in the face of an overwhelming tragedy...usually, 'Oh God!'

I'm preparing a very special worship experience for the folks of Phos Hilaron Church that will build in time to 'do' prayer and to experience God up close and personal. So, I thought I'd pass along 5 book titles that I've found helpful in preparing for this weekend.

1. Believing Prayer by Andrew Murray -- simple, but powerful. This is great primer on prayer.
2. Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels -- classic Hybels gets right to the point
3. Pivotal Praying by Tim Elmore & John Hull -- this is packed with practical prayer wisdom and I'd highly recommend this to you if you'd like to pray better NOW.
4. Hearing God by Dallas Willard -- not an easy read as usual with Willard, but the effort will be very rewarding.
5. Prayer--Finding the Heart's True Home by Richard J. Foster -- the opening chapter is AMAZING! You've got to at least hit a bookstore and read that! And, then go ahead and buy the book.

We all pray! We may as well do it with a better grasp of how to grow our faith and relationship with God along the journey.

It's not really about faith 'in prayer' -- it's about Faith in God who is in charge of answering our prayers in the manner He deems best.

Pray Strong!

Helen Keller on Teaming Up!

"Alone we can do so little;
together we can do so much."
- Helen Keller

Leading a Volunteer Revolution is an amazing ride because I get to see the absolute best in people as they stretch and sacrifice and go the extra miles to benefit others. Launching Phos Hilaron Church has been a huge joy because I get to work with some of the most passionately gifted people on the planet. To work with them this week at 'Phorce Phield' -- our home-based version of a Backyard Bible Club or Vacation Bible School -- was a powerfully rewarding experience because it reminded me of the power of 'we'!

'WE' can do so much more than 'ME' -- no matter how great 'ME' is.

As a leader I'm fully convinced that when God's Volunteer Movement gets fully awake, energized and empowered that there'll be a revolution like this world has never witnessed. Imagine the collective firepower of the Body Of Christ on the move to solve the great challenges of the world. Rick Warren identifies 5 Global Giants in his PEACE plan that challenge the Church to rise up and be THE Church that Jesus imagined when he trained the original core team for the work of advancing the Gospel.

Creative Risk & Launching at the EDGE of Disaster

As a church planter who chose to launch with a staff I think a lot about stuff I didn't have to think about as a Youth Minister at a large church - like how to make payroll for the team every couple of weeks. And, God is full of surprises -- like the fact that we've made it every single time and that He's given us everything we've needed right when we've needed it. He has been out in front of us the whole way.

There's no question that a cash infusion would allow us to do some really cool marketing campaigns and add some video production gear to boost our creative team capabilities a notch or three, but the 'needs' are being met.

Lesson # 1 for me = God is IN this with us and HE's resourcing the movement

Lesson # 2 for me = What God Originates He Also Orchestrates (originally spoken by Troy Dobbs)

Lesson #3 for me = Launching with a strong creative / missional edge drives some 'normal' church people away, but it draws those with a missional heart and a will to impact culture. It's a natural filter.

Lesson #4 for me = 'risk fatigue' is lurking among our team and in my heart all the time.
Sometimes we ask ourselves if we should keep pushing the missional and creative edges because we know that it 'costs' us in terms of reaching more 'churched' people right now who could help resource the movement. But, we also know that 'playing it safe' invites a slide back into 'church as usual' which is death to the dream of Phos Hilaron Church. The core of our dream is to reach those who are M.I.A. (Missing in Action) from the Kingdom and those who are P.O.W.s (Prisoners of War) and in our hearts we know that this means that as leaders and as a body PHC must 'cowboy up' and risk playing behind enemy lines, going hand to hand and heart to heart in our neighborhoods, and taking it to the streets in all ways possible. So, we ask for courage to dance at the edge of disaster where God can show Himself strong and abundantly able to do what He wants to do to resource this movement.

Lesson #5 for me = Play to Win or Head to the House. Since God is in this we don't have to 'play it safe' and we don't have to protect our gains and play 'not to lose' -- we can stay aggressive in our methods and dreams and actions (don't read that as obnoxious and 'in your face' , rather read it as taking creative risks to advance the Kingdom of God in creative, compelling missional ways). So, a personal mantra related to the enterprises in my life these days is 'Play to Win'!

I had an old coach who pulled us aside before a big game and gave us a great pep -talk that started something like this, 'Boys, it's not how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose. And, if you lose, don't come back...' He was just kidding, kind of...

And, if I said that to Phos Hilaron Church I'd be kind of kidding, but kind of serious, because the church in America has become so preoccupied with 'pretty and nice' that we've forgotten that our leader took the ball across the goal line up a dust covered hill spattered with his own blood--not pretty, but effective! Sometimes winning does matter and sometimes winning God's way is to play hard and do the gritty work of advancing the Gospel in unorthodox ways. If you wonder about whether God is into 'unorthodox' ways consider how He brought salvation to us -- a Virgin, a baby, a cross! Not orthodox, but ultimately EFFECTIVE.

Just thinking today!
Play to WIN or Head to the HOUSE!

Mighty Casey Up to Bat -- A Re-Take on a Classic

I'm in the office today preparing a talk called 'Swing the Bat' about Power Investing from Jesus' perspective in Matthew 25:14-30. I came across this cool audio as I was doing research that I thought you'd enjoy.

Questions Communicators Must Answer

Reading a simple book by Andy Stanley and Lane Jones called 'Communicating for a Change' that is as powerfully on target as it is simple.

On page 89 that suggest these 4 Power Questions that every leader / communicator must answer before they deliver their news:
1. What do they need to know?
2. Why do they need to know it?
3. What do they need to do?
4. Why do they need to do it?

Just thought you'd like to know.

God of this City

Phos Hilaron Church was launched to take the Gospel to the streets in innovative new ways so we can connect with people who won't connect to business as usual in a church. This morning we gathered at the fringe of downtown Louisville for a Father's Day event built around a 'Fishing' theme. It was amazing. Today we sang a new song by Chris Tomlin called 'God of this City' that shows our passion for Louisville in a powerful way.

It's definitely my favorite song about our mission these days.

Jeff Fuson

I love being 'Daddy'

Just got in from fishing with the two most incredible boys in the world.  Washed the fish guts and worm goo from my hands and settled in for the waning moments of Father's day--absoulutely blown away that God loves us as much as HE does and that He allows us to live in this country.  I don't take any of this for granted and sheer gratitude pours from my heart all the time--especially when I look into the eyes of my children.

Earlier today we got to play in the pool together and for the first time I can remember I strapped on a pair of blue tinted speedo goggles and enjoyed the view of our little man diving under the water wide eyed & joy-filled as we tossed torpedoes to each other under the surface.

This morning we enjoyed being at Water Front with our Phos Hilaron Church family for Father's Day built around a fishing theme.  Bob Laffoon, Randy Foster and Eric Foster did a great job sharing some fly fishing ideas with us and our oldest son got his imagination stirred so much that he came home and spent all afternoon making a 'frog' fishing lure from styrofoam and a plastic bracelet coated in green paint.

God has blessed me with the most imaginative, creative church family in the world and this morning we had the chance to meet many of our homeless neighbors and I got to spend some powerful time with Wade, a former commercial fisherman from Alaska who had a breakthrough moment with God.  Butch Lewis did an amazing job of connecting and working with Wade and others who needed extra T.L.C.   What a great morning.

So, we had an incredible day all the way around.

Hot Dog Leaders Get Their Teams Killed....

It'll never make it to ESPN Sports Center, but it was a brutal competition in the hallways of Camden Station Elementary School among the 5th Grade Class for and 'end of the school year' field day (forced indoors by lightning lurking above).

I watched a powerful leadership lesson emerge among the ranks of Moll's Maniacs as one of the self-proclaimed 'leaders' nearly cost her team the 'over-under relay' championship. She was obviously gifted, obviously a leader, very cutesy, cheer-leadery, freckle-faced cool kid. Her athletic ability eclipsed most of the other Maniac's & yet she almost cost her team the race.

How could it be that the most skilled athlete on the team could cost her team? She refused to play team ball. She failed to make a clean hand-off nearly ever single time and so the less skilled player behind her was sent scampering for the blue kickball more than once. It was just that Ms. Hotdog was too good to play a simple game and made it more difficult for her team to succeed. It was weird to watch her hurt her team -- frustrating.

She was so busy being cutesy and cool that she couldn't do the mundane work of passing the ball along. She was the consummate 'hot-dog'.

Many of the brightest, most talented wanna-be leaders I know are hot-dogs. They simply must be noticed and they must do something, even destructive things, to get personal press. Not sure what drives the Hot-Dog Leader but it's usually not team success. As a matter of fact, they generally don't give a flying flip about whether the team wins or looses. In the end these hot-dogs must be grilled and tossed to the canines hounding the grill. Or, they must learn to turn down the little voices in their head that cause them to perform in manners that are attention seeking rather than team enhancing.

Leadership is a team-sport and hot-dogs simply can't lead winning teams. So, Hot-Dog shape up or get your hind-end roasted and tossed to the dogs....

Just a simple lesson from my 5th Graders last few days of Elementary School.

Thanks to the folks at Oldham County Schools!

Tonite my daughter was awarded top honors as a leader in her high school and I was humbled again to know that God has blessed me beyond imagination with so many good things. Especially this incredible young lady who's graced my life for 18 years.

Jim Rohn has said that 'we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with' and I think he's right. For our daughter her top 5 friends would be hard to identify because she has friends across so many groups and types of people and she loves people. (they love her back!)

I think for our daughter she's also the average of the 5 biggest influences in her life.

I'd guess they go like this....
1. Our extended family
2. Her lovely mom, her two little brothers and me
3. Her teachers at SOHS, SOMS, and Crestwood Elementary who have invested time, energy and passion into her life.
4. The Youth Ministry Team and the people from Crestwood Baptist Church where she's been loved most of her life. (I was on staff there as Youth Minister for 18 years from when my wife was pregnant with our daughter)
5. The incredible God Chasers of Phos Hilaron Church who have dared to leave the safety of the 'known' and head into new territory to stake new claims west of the known off the edges of the map. This group of people has gathered with our family to imagine a church into existence that's focused on being on Mission with God and on being The Body of Christ in motion in our community.

If I tried to name individuals I'd miss dozens who've been vital. So, I won't try to name them all, but I will say that our daughter is who she is because of the input of dozens of great people over her growing up years.

Gratefully,
Jeff Fuson

Discipleship at the YMCA

Early in 2008 my daughter decided that I needed to get more exercise and Julie agreed so we joined the YMCA near our home and it's been a lot of fun and I really do enjoy getting up even earlier and getting moving. And, my brain & body thank me!!

There's an amazing array of tools to sculpt, shape & tone our bodies and new interactive computer aided tools that will track our progress and help us achieve customized goals. What used to be a 'one size fits all' approach related to getting fit has morphed into a very personalized game plan built around lots of different tools and custom coaching toward individual goal attainment.

One of the 'wonderings' I have these days is how to accomplish the same thing at Phos Hilaron Church. How can we build in personalized spiritual life coaching so that people can grow into the full-on Christ Follower (what we call an 'Apprentice of Jesus') that they were dreamed by God to be.

So, we're building in Life Transformation Groups that will be coached by 'Transformers' --people who are willing to train as Spiritual Life Coaches much the same way a Fitness Coach trains people to accomplish health goals. The Transformers role is to oversee the personal development of each member of her/his group. So, what a transformer IS NOT may be as important as what he/she IS. If a person has super strong preaching/prophetic gifting then it's not likely that he/she will be a good transformer. Because a person with huge preaching/prophetic gifts cannot silence themselves long enough to hear from anyone else at a deep enough level to help them grow. They tend to be 'one size fits all' communicators and that certainly has a place when addressing the whole body collective. He/she is not a 'therapist or counselor' because they're not simply processing past trash. The 'Transformer' is very much a coach of the inner life -- of how to grow a vital dynamic relationship with God through the work of Jesus powered by the Holy Spirit.

The 'transformers' are the key to a church that offers help and hope and growth to those who want to grow strong in their walk with Christ.

I've got the concept in mind a clear view of the desired outcomes...now it's time to build the team to accomplish the dream!

Working out!

Command & Control and Prime Time Churches

"I think the Web lives an always Prime Time model. I think older channels, like television, still think they control what is Prime Time."

It's the end of the world as we know it --and, I feel fine!

The sky is falling!

The landscape under our feet is shifting & shakin and rockin & rollin' but the sky is definitely not falling -- at least not today.

I'm 4 months into the full-on Launch of Phos Hilaron Church and most of the time it's total blast because we get to think about what we're doing in new ways and ask important BIG QUESTIONS about why we do what we do in churches and about where 'church in America' is going. Thus, where we need to be trekking on our journey with God to bring the Great News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to life in their lives.

I spent 3 years of hard study and prayer and near desperate attempts to get God to quit bugging me about launching Phos Hilaron Church. In that study time I learned that the church in America is being 'de-centered' and pushed to the fringes of society. I think a partial reason that many push back on Christian Churches these days is because so many of our churches are based on Command and Control and there's an inherent distrust of that mode of operation among the American public overall. When people sniff command and control in a setting they catch a deep visceral sense that somethings amiss and they run for cover like seeking shelter from a frayed power line whipping & sparking on a wet side road after a thunder storm. Yet, most churches run on a command and control model that would make General Patton proud.

The challenge is that most churches don't know that they've been de-centered and still try to play as if they control all the chips in the game and that they get to 'broker God' to the masses. They operate as if God is only available at our fine retail establishment -- aka 'our church building' --where we'll dispense a little God to you in return for some of your time, attention & cash. But, we'll dole Him out to you, hungering peasant, when we want and how we want.

Now these ideas of 'brokering God', 'de-centered church' and 'command and control' all work together. Overall we in the Church Leadership Positions haven't figured out that 'God has left the building' a long time ago and He's out dancing in the streets with real people who are encountering Him whenever and wherever they choose. That is, He insists on doing what He wants when He wants with whom He wants through whatever medium He wants -- He simply won't allow us to 'broker' Him. It's a seismic shift from the 'Communism Model of Chruch' where the Clergy decide when, where, and how the peasants will get some God to a web empowered people who can get what they want when they want it in whatever size, shape and color they want it NOW. This shift is more hugemongous than we can imagine.

I was in Poland a few years ago and I was mesmerized by the Poles who were running out of the shadows of command and control communism into the bright free sunlight of the Online world. I've never met people who knew how to get more from a laptop over the Internet than these bright people. Their pent up hunger, almost desperation. for 'more' of everything, pushes them to leverage the Internet in bold new ways to deliver the goods that they seek. God is on the loose in the world with a power that dwarfs what the Internet is bringing to people and He's been 'online' for all of eternity and his 'Universe Wide Web' (UWW, not just WWW, is a massive tome waiting to be mined!) is available to all -- whether they ever come to our 'church' (aka, building)! This is HUGE and demands our immediate attention. We must change NOW rapidly.

We, in the Church business, face the same challenge that the Network Television Industry does. We can no longer dictate when 'Prime Time' is nor how people will 'consume' our product. So, the quote that I opened this blog with reminded me of what we wrestled with in early 2007 at JAVA--my favorite Coffee shop so far. (Although, I really like LaVida Java a lot, too / conversely not a big 'Bucks fan because they don't offer free wi-fi which is the bread of life for a nomadic church starter !)

Our core launch team wrestled with the notion of buiding a church for 2017, not just for 2007 and we realized that we're up against an incredible task -- like racing across shifting sand barefoot in a sandstorm. The terrain is being shifted by wind and seismic forces that have been pent up for decades at least while we try to navigate back to 'center' so we can set up shop and dictate the game via a 'command & control' model. The reality is that there is really no more 'center' for us in the Church world just like there's no more 'Prime Time' for Network Television. The best they & we can do is try to garner market share from an increasingly multiplexed consumer who holds all the 'attention' cards in her/his hand.

I think American Idol is getting this right -- they've got a show that does garner feverish 'prime-time' behavior AND they also allow people access to much of their content online so that people can consume the show in a variety of ways. Plus, they allow the audience to participate in what's going on by voting for contestants, thus giving the 'Wii' Generations a way to play along. Now, at Phos Hilaron Church, we're wondering how to do the same sorts of things -- allow people to 'consume' what we're producing in a variety of ways --both in 'Prime Time' settings (Sundays at 10 AM at Tinseltown in Springhurst a couple of Sundays a month and throughout the community the other Sundays doing Service Worship & Parable Worship Experiences) and via the web. We're working hard to produce live Worship experience that go beyond just consuming another worship experience (the # 1 hobby of the average American consumer-Christian), but we've got a long way to go. The good news is we're asking some tough questions about why we do what we do and how we can morph consumers into contributors and spectators into participators (thanks Rick Warren and the P.E.A.C.E. Plan for some great ways to think about this). ,

Some things we're always wondering are things like this....
-how we can help our people be a part of Worship experience rather than just watch the 'professional Christians' worship for them?
-how can we invite participation rather than just spectation (is that a word?)
-how can we allow the people of Phos Hilaron Church to collaborate in building the worship experience?
-how can we invite people to share in our experiences via the web -- and, not just how they can download a podcast of our worship event, rather, how we can empower a collaborative learning network of wanna-be Apprentices of Jesus?

And, these notions, force me as the point-leader to always question Command and Control and it begs me to share power and to allow others to play along and to participate --not just to watch me and consume what I'm 'preaching'. Some days I'm better at this than others!

So, in an always ON/Non-PrimeTime world where people can TiVo most experiences of their lives how can we, in the church-business, continue to engage participators and not just passify consumers?

At Phos Hilaron Church we're wrestling with these issues moment by moment and we're building a 'high-participation' model by asking people to worship in new, more participatory ways like Service Worship Experiences. And, it's risky, because Consumer-Christians have a hard time shifting from spectating to playing. But, we believe that the 'Wii' Generations want to be 'in the game' rather than watch the game, so we're choosing to race after P.O.W.s and M.I.A.s who need church to allow them to participate & contribute rather than just consumer another mash-up of songs, prayers, & preaching.

We're tinkering, toying, and plowing new ground so pray for us that we'll have stamina and resources for the Westward Expansion needed to help the Church in America move along on shifting sand.

We're leaning into 2017 as we build out Phos Hilaron Church and I've got to tell you that God has provisioned this journey in miraculous ways over and over again. (yes, there have been some sleepless nites for a few of us as we've wondered if we can pay the bills one more time and every single time, right on time, God has given us just what we need) WOW, what a ride.

De-Centered, recovering command and control leader, on a mission from God! (Blues Brothers)

Have a great day!
Jeff Fuson

p.s. One of the most excellent resources that helped me begin to think about this was Reggie McNeal's work called "Present Future". I read the book and then our Core Launch Team for Phos Hilaron Church studied the Present Future DVD series. This got a lot of the academic stuff and theological stuff that was pounding on my heart into a format that people with a lot less time and energy for that sort of thing could get and take action on quickly. Big KUDDOS to Reggie McNeal for a fine piece of work that brings a lot of Theology, Demography, and other 'ologies' into an actionable package.

My Best Buddy!

I was shocked!
My heart filled like a water balloon drinking from a fire hydrant.
Floored and awed and "HAPPIER than a tornado in a trailer park" as 'Mater would say. (you've got to see the movie, Cars!)

It was just me and my little guy chillin' at Starbucks because he was thirsty and we got a bottled water and split a mocha frapacinno. So, I asked him, who's your girlfriend and he just got a shy freckle-faced grin and acted a little embarassed. So, I went on, 'Who's your best buddy?' and I fully expected it to be Tristan, or Nicolas who he spends nearly every waking moment with, but his answer floored me and flooded my heart--he answered, 'You'.

Oh God, You know that we live in the land of God provisions, especially these days as we wait and wonder what You're gonna do with us, through us, and for us at Phos Hilaron Church. And, I'm blown away by how you have cleared every hurdle, opened every door, provided every resource, sent money from the strangest of places and most of all I'm amazed that you show me how to be loved by sending me a little freckle faced 'best buddy'! Thank-you.

Amen.

Phos Hilaron at Thunder this Evening

Thunder Over Louisville is a vivid display of the power of light to draw attention...especially 'dancing light'. Phos Hilaron Church is named after the notion of 'Dancing Light' and reminds this new church that our mission as individuals is to light up our little corner of the planet. At Phos Hilaron Church we call this 'Mission at 1 Degree' (M1D). As I watched the sky light up from the glow of these dancing lights I was reminded again of how powerful it is just to love the people around us the way that Jesus would.

Here's to Light Dancers all Over the World! You are like a candle and I'm gonna place you on a golden lampstand!

Tonite was AWESOME / Thunder Over Louisville 2008

11 year old boys are kinetic and goofy and wonderful! My son is no exception. It was wonderful to be at Thunder Over Louisville this evening with just him, me and our bikes. It was COLD and spat a little rain, but we dressed for the weather and the bikes allowed us to park over 2 miles from Thunder Ground Zero so we could make a fast get away after Thunder. The bikes also allowed us to check out a lot more of the total venue in downtown Louisville and we actually rode around much of 3rd, 4th and 5th streets and finally settled in for dinner at Jay Gumbos. He's is a big sea-food fan and has been wanting to eat crawdads for whie so tonite was his lucky night and he dove into a bowl of Crawfish Etoufee' and enjoyed it a lot. Later sharing a funnel cake and enjoying the last few acts of the Air Show and then being pounded by the report from the cannons on the Second Street Bridge and the fireworks sitting beside him on our bikes was a magic time for me. I know all to well as we prepare to send our oldest to college this fall that in just a few minutes we'll be preparing him to graduate from high school and Thunder won't be nearly as magical. But, tonight it was all I could hope for and more -- just my awesome 11 year old, me, a couple of bikes, a whole lot of others at the Water Front, Thunder and the Magic of Connecting with my son right where he is. Amazing nite to be sure.

Oh yeah, and he packed along some money he's earned from doing his chores and couldn't wait to buy a couple of 'shockers' --one is fake pack of gum with a 'piece of gum' sticking out of it so that when it's offered to someone and they 'pull' the gum they get the 'gee whiz' shocked out of em and the other is a 'shocking lasser'. Heaven for an 11 year old boy for sure! But, more revealing of the true heart of this amazing little boy is that on the way out he grabbed a street vendor passing by to buy his little brother a gift with his own money. This goofy, 'shocking' 11 year old has a heart of gold. I'm so glad God let him come to be my son.

I'm so grateful that God has let me be 'daddy' -- it's my favorite thing in this world!

Ride your bike to Thunder next year! It's a blast.

Thank You for Today Daddy.

"Thank you for today daddy." Straight from the grateful heart of a tuckered out 5 year old who had a great day holding hands discovering the longest cave system in the world at Mammoth Cave near Cave City, Kentucky.

His simple sentence inspired the same from my heart to our Heavenly Father, God who provided a great day for us with the boys. As a parent I learn a lot about prayer (or, at least I think I learn a lot because I assume that God is a lot like me because I was formed after His image....) when my children are grateful. Straight from a heart filled with gratitude....thank you for today daddy.

Everyday I find reasons to say prayers that like to God. I'm amazed that He provides the resources for us to have days like this in the midst of Launching a Church and 3 kids, car hassles, taxes, and rising gas prices! And, as a Church Planter I promise that I've learned to rely on His provision, sometimes miraculous and always right on time, more than ever.

I'm learning to live in the land of God provisions as suggested by Jesus to His followers in the Sermon on the Mount and it sure takes a lot of stress out of living to know that God is concerned about everything going on in my life -- even a simple day trip that fills a little boy's heart up with great memories of being together.

Lock & Key Cafe Georgetown Kentucky

I like 'one-of-a-kind' people, places and things.

Lock & Key Cafe is one of those 'one-of-a-kind' places fo' sure!

Here's some of what I've encountered here so far...
-a floor that falls away like a carnival tilted house--cool...
-an 8,000 pound vault door left over from banking days
-Ale81 Softdrink--too bad this is pretty much a central Kentucky thing 'cause the rest of the world deserves a sip!
-rattlesnake mocha--pretty good, but I'll do something dif nxt time
-and of course, the whole reason I came here -- FREE WiFi --thus this post.

At least you know where to find free wi-fi in Georgetown, Kentucky now! And, grab an Ale81 while you're here....

On the road,

Steve Jobs Standing Firm at the Epicenter..

One of my fav mags is WIRED b/c they cover a lot of emerging ideas in the tech industry and I'm always wondering what these innovations might mean for movement & meaning making.

Fascinating article this month about Steve Jobs & Apple called, "Evil Genius" that discusses how counter-intuitive Jobs & Apple have been in the face of Silcon Valley group think. Pretty fascinating stuff.

Even WIRED admits it blew it when it offered Apple some advice on how to survive back in the late 90's.

The leadership take-away is the Leadership of anything cutting edge requires courage, intuition and authenticity-- a willingness to stick to the gyro of the internal mantra in the face of the 'experts' at times.

My good friend Mark Scureman says that leadership is tough and complex....I think he's right!

Have some guts! Lead STRONG.

Life Transformation Groups --Small Groups with a Big Purpose!

Here's the guts of a hand out for the Phos Hilaron Church body that we'll begin to work with on Sunday, March 30, 2008. It outlines some of the big ideas behind our small groups (what we call Life Transformation Groups or 'LXG's)

Go Small to Get Big!

Challenge by choice = to grow stronger means risking growing smaller …it’s all up to you how far you go in this process… The Smaller you go and the more ‘real’ you get with a few others the better chance you have of growing into the person God dreamed you to becomeYOUR BEST LIFE NOW!! (yep, I know I'm ripping off Joel Olsteen here! But, it's apparent that most of us want our best life right now when I take a look at all the hottest books at Barnes & Noble these days...and, I'm not endorsing, nor trashing Olsteen....I don't know enough to say one way or the other yet, but he sure has a HUGE church!)

X = 'transformation' (Romans 12:2) is ‘growth’ into the person God designed you to be.

Zone -- A public middle school region where you’re most likely to connect naturally with people who live relatively close to you. (Randy Frazee's book 'Making Room for Life' impacted this thought process a ton)

LXG (Life Transformation Group)
Purpose –transformation (growth) into full on apprentices of Jesus because that takes us to our BEST LIFE NOW!

Framework for LXGs
One Big Thing (O.B.T.) is the starting point of each sessionPHC on the same page across generations to simplify life and allow us to grow stronger faster. (The Big Idea
by Dave Ferguson, impacted this thought process)
Bible is the core text, but it’s not a ‘Bible Study’ – it’s application to real life (Rick Howerton, Small Groups Guru of Serendipity House Publishing taught me this....)
Real friendships are a possible by-product / not the goal
Spiritual Growth into a full on Apprentice of Jesus is the desired outcome. (this is the central mission of PHC -- turning spectators into players! -- ordinary people into full-on apprentices of Jesus)
in person, online, over the phone, at a home, in a coffee shop – whenever, wherever fits the participants (other than Sunday AM and Sunday PM so we are able to focus key people & energy on working with Weebees, Kiddos & Teens during these most available time slots--thanks Northpoint Community Church and Andy Stanley for this concept)
5 to 12 people
designed to reproduce new LXGs

Key Players in the LXG Process…
-H.O.S.T. = Heart for people / Open up your house / Start the Coffee Pot / Talk through the OBT Discussion Guide provided each week.
Virtually no prep and no training required. (this concept came from my incredible Launch Coach, Mike Woods after he'd spent some time with Rick Warren of Saddleback Church at Ebenezers in downtown D.C. a few weeks ago)

-Transformer – a person who will be studying the art of Spiritual Life Coaching & will work with those ready to grow strong now. Requires a deep personal relationship with Christ, ongoing training experiences, study, and a high level of prep. Kind of like a ‘Fitness Trainer’ for your soul! Transformers work with individuals in LXGs to help them grow spiritually via customized spiritual life plans and Spiritual Life Coaching in even smaller groups than LXGs. (this concept is based on Bobby Clinton's concept of the Mentoring Matrix and the book, How People Grow)

When LXGs gather....
-Weebee LXGs – Sunday Mornings
-Kiddo LXGs – Sunday Mornings
-Teen LXGs – Sunday Evenings
-Adult Groups – All Kinds / All the Time / In Person / Online / Phone

NEXT STEPS
Lobby Today … Meet some people from your Zone today.
Teens = This evening –bowling –see Laura in the Lobby
Join us for Upcoming Worship Experiences at PHC—6th at TT / 13th at South Oldham Little League where we’ll divi up the work by M.S. Zones…
The Next Zone Party is on Sunday, April 27th for Sermon on the Mound at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park – what a great way to get to know your neighbors.
Wanna H.O.S.T. or train to be a Transformer? See Meredith

We are being ‘connected’ into the body of Christ brick by brick
Ephesians 2:21-22 –we’re being connected into God’s dwelling – the Body of Christ on earth…

Commander's Intent & Service Worship at Phos Hilaron Church

When we started dreaming Phos Hilaron Church into existence in 2007 we studied the 25 Most Innovative Churches in America as ranked by Outreach Magazine and we dug into Scripture. We focused a ton on what Jesus had to say to His early followers and to how the first church in the book of Acts lived out her fresh mission. And, we studied the Newbigin Triangle that suggests that for a church to truly be on mission she has to touch 3 sides of a 'triangle'--Gospel is the first side, culture is the second, and 'Ecclesia' (church itself) is the third. Mark Driscoll does a great job in the early part of 'Reformission' describing the Newbigin triangle and what happens if you fail to touch a side of the triangle. For example, if a church only touches the 'church' side of the triangle it's possible to arrive at a place where mission is lost and the body turns inward & focuses only on itself and self-preservation. If a church fails to touch the 'culture' side of the triangle she looses her 'light-ness' and 'salt-ness' - she fails to engage the real world and slides into irrelevance. If a church fails to keep the Gospel edge in play she becomes a country-club with programs that may be culturally relevant but don't deliver any God breathed passion or power. (Having a form of Godliness, but denying the full power of the Gospel. See 2 Timothy 3:4)

I asked that little core of wanna-be revolutionaries to study a ton, to pray a lot and to re-imagine what Church might be.

We talked a lot about 'Commander's Intent' related to what Jesus' desire was for this missional movement (ecclesia) that started with a rag-tag bunch of tax collectors, fisherman, recovering demoniacs and reformed scoundrels. We wondered if what most of us had experienced in our churches growing up in America had much to do with 'Commander's Intent' and we concluded that most of time there was a huge canyon between His intent and our execution of His mission for the world. So, we wondered how we might re-imagineer 'church' so that we might be closer to His imagination for this movement we're a part of .

Out of our re-imagineering of 'church' and 'worship' we arrived at the concept of 'Service Worship' where we take one Sunday each month and partner with an existing organization to meet needs in our local community (Mission at 2 Degrees) So far these 'worship' bandwidth stretching excursions have taken us Apple Patch Community, Salvatation Army Angel Tree Warehouse, Jefferson Street Homeless Shelter, Oldham County Middle School and yesterday we worked with the team at Good News Homes in LaGrange, Kentucky.

Be careful where your head and heart go now just because we're introducing worship as you've not experienced it before. Check out these 2 places where the word 'worship' is mentioned in the Bible and then come back to tell me if you don't agree with us that the church in America has too narrowly defined worship as teaching/preaching & singing of some sort. Or, in most cases when an American Christian uses the word 'worship' most likely he/she is talking about the 'music' that helps them enter into the presence of God. So, go to Romans 12:1-2 & Genesis 22:5 and then come back to this blog and tell me if you don't agree that your definition of worship has little to do with what the Bible calls worship. It includes service to the King and sacrifice of what we hold most dear.

Phos Hilaron Church constantly explores what Commander's Intent is for us as a body and for the church in America and around the world. One of my greatest hopes is that we'll have the courage to dance on the missional edge, keep expanding the band-width on 'worship' and re-imagineering 'church' so that we live close to 'Commander's Intent'.

Because of Commander's Intent....We are passionate about pursuing M.I.A.s -- those missing from God's mission and P.O.W.s -- those held captive by circumstances & sometimes decisions that keep them bound and distanced from experiencing God's love. (the reality is that God loves us and desires deep, meaningful relationship with us even when we've gone a long way from Him and botched the deal badly. So, when we are 'P.O.W.' He hasn't quit loving we've just been wrapped up in chains of happenstance or strong willed rebellion)

Every church must constantly re-visit 'commander's intent' for their body of believers and then have the courage to re-imagineer fresh ways to execute the plays in God's dream for that church.

Not only do people perish where there is no vision, but a church can loose her soul if the leadership is gutless and fails to lead people into God's mission.

This goes for our individual lives as well!

See ya,
Jeff Fuson

Easter-experience.com

The core crew of Phos Hilaron Church is imagining and working toward a powerful way to experience Easter at Tinseltown Cinemas at the Springhurst Towne Center -- 4400 Towne Center Drive in Louisville, Kentucky 40241.

Imagineering, visioneering, brain-storming, team-building are all part of the work of bringing worship experiences like this to life at Phos Hilaron these days. We're working hard to expand the bandwidth on what 'worship' is and to re-imagine what 'church' is.

It's tons of fun to imagine what might be with a tremendously talented team who are all deeply commited to loving our neighbors into God's dream for the world.

I'm having a blast working with this team to imagine what might be....

If you're in Louisville on March 23, 2008 ck out easter-experience.com and come experience Easter with us.

Phos Hilaron Church

According to Bobby Clinton in his study of Christian leaders God works with the leader to bring him to a place where all the experiences, trials, education, training, failures and connections gained in life get dialed in on ONE BIG THING that God wants done in the world. Bobby Clinton calls this time in a leader's life, 'convergence' and it's when God leverages all that he's built into the leader to advance His mission in the world.

God is allowing me to stretch every leadership muscle, every people-building skill, any notion of how to build a team, and is teaching me how to trust Him for 'manna' everyday in the conception, creation, and Launch of Phos Hilaron Church.

I'm having the ride of my life and have a front row seat to what God is up to on a daily basis to bless our launch, to bring the right people at the right time and to help us run after 'M.I.A.s' and 'P.O.W.s' -- those who are not choosing a life connected with God or held captive by busted choices or circumstances.

I really do believe that Jesus came to give us access to a great big wide-open adventure with God and Phos Hilaron Church is all about helping people adventure with Him into the life He designed 'em for.
